The Peter Shaffer Memorial
April 3, 2017 | American Airlines Theater
On Monday April 3rd, stars of stage and screen will join FTP to celebrate the life and legacy of Sir Peter Shaffer, much-beloved English playwright and screenwriter known for such iconic works as Equus, Amadeus, and Lettice and Lovage.
From the stables of England, to the Opera houses of Austria, to the Inca kingdom of Peru, Shaffer’s complex explorations of the human condition and mastery of memorable theatrical spectacle have excited and challenged audiences worldwide. Fundamental Theater Project, of which Sir Peter is the honorary patron, is proud to bring these treasured characters and words back to the New York stage.
Shaffer became attached to our international artist driven non-profit after he worked with Artistic Director Sam Underwood on a production of Equus with Alec Baldwin out in East Hampton. Baldwin, too, has been a generous patron and supporter of FTP, and is a major contributor towards this special event.
The Memorial is sponsored by and brought to you in collaboration with Show-Score. Show Score is the online-hub for everything you need to know about the New York theatre scene, including a directory of all shows playing on Broadway, Off- and Off-Off-Broadway, box-office links and ticket discounts, and most importantly, they bring together reviews from both professional critics and audience members, to provide you more opportunity to find the right show for you. Its ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ for theatre lovers.
Please join our international ensemble for an evening of theatrical excerpts, including Equus, Lettice and Lovage, Black Comedy and Royal Hunt Of The Sun. The event will also feature special guest live and video tributes from Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Tom Stoppard, John Guare, Juliet Mills, Tim Curry and Simon Callow among others.
A note from Artistic Director Sam Underwood on the issue of ticketing:
“Sir Peter Shaffer was a very close personal friend, as well as an avid supporter and Honorary Patron of Fundamental Theater Project. I was surprised to discover that there was not a Broadway memorial planned for this legend of the theatre – the National Theater in London also has one planned for March – so we took it upon ourselves as a company to celebrate Peter’s life. FTP will not benefit financially from this event. Initially, we wanted to present this memorial free of charge for the public. With the incredible generosity of Hilaria and Alec Baldwin, we were able to secure a venue and offset a majority of the budget. Unfortunately, due to a series of events outside of our control, FTP was required to move the date and venue of the memorial which, in turn, also affected our budget. As a small non-profit company, we do not have the necessary resources to solely fund an event of this scale and prestige, so the decision was made by myself and members of the board, to request a small reservation fee to offset the cost of a venue and memorial befitting Sir Peter’s memory. Show-Score.com have also graciously donated their services for this event, including box office without processing fees. This means that every dollar goes into the venue rental, and not into either business’ pockets. I truly hope that this addresses any concerns people may have over this delicate issue. Celebrating the beautiful life and exquisite words of my dear friend is my chief priority for this special evening. If you would like to discuss further or assist in any way, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
The memorial will take place Monday, April 3rd, 5pm at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway. Tickets for the event are $10-15, and can be purchased here.
